Many have made New Year’s resolutions to get healthy and fit in 2009. This is no simple task but some have figured out a way to combine their activism with their workout. Fitness fundraisers have a long history in the form of walk-a-thons, charity marathons and dance-a-thons. Fitness instructors have began to use their talents to bring in money for non-for- profit organizations. Group exercise classes such as yoga and the latest fitness craze Zumba Fitness have also taken to this trend. This allows group exercise enthusiasts participate in a special exercise class that is generally longer in length than their usual class. Participants also pay an entry fee or donation that goes to the charity or cause. Participants may also get monetary pledges towards their participation in the fitness fundraiser. The result is a unique opportunity that allows participants to burn calories while helping a good cause. One of the latest fitness crazes is Zumba Fitness (www.zumba.com)
Zumba fuses hypnotic musical rhythms and tantalizing moves to
create a dynamic workout system designed to be FUN and EASY TO DO!
The Zumba Fitness goal is simple: “We want people to want to work out, to love working out, to get hooked “. By integrating Zumba into everyday life individuals may achieve long term benefits while experiencing an absolute blast in one exhilarating hour of caloric burning, heart racing, muscle pumping, body energizing movements meant to engage and captivate for life!
Zumba Fitness is based in Latin dance and includes salsa, merengue, reggae ton, cumbia, belly dance, chacha and hip hop dancing.
So are you looking for a good workout but still want to get in some activism? Keep checking this blog for updated posts on Zumba Fitness Fundraisers in Pierce and King Counties.

2008 has been THE Year of Zumba for Rica and Cha Cha. We hope you have enjoyed taking the journey with us. We could not have done this without all of the wonderful smiling faces of all those who come to our Zumba classes! Zumba is already fun but you all make it even better.
In February 2008, Rica and Sherina joined forces to help spread the joy of Zumba to more corners of the South Puget Sound and even Seattle.
Sherina hosted a Zumbathon fundraiser for CARA in Seattle in early 2008. Another is planned for 1/17/09 so join us in Seattle for some Zumba love & help us raise money for Communities Against Rape and Abuse (CARA).
Rica took Zumba to University Place and brought the joy of ZUMBA to several Zeniors (seniors) and the Beacon Center and Tobey Jones in Tacoma. Zumba is for all ages, especially the young at heart. Even Ms. Lois at age 80+ loves to Zumba. Get signed up for Rica’s classes in UP by calling 253-460-2530
Sherina continued to offer her FREE Community Zumba class at Church For All Nations in Parkland. We welcomed many zumbadoras to our class throughout the summer. Many thanks to the CFAN family, Sr. Pastor Bill Wolfson, Pastor Dennis Gunnerson, CFAN Women’s Ministry, Vernita, Anita & family, CFAN Health Ministry, Nations Social Services. Donna, Theresa, Charmaine, and Shelly for keeping me going. I’ll see you all in 2009! Keep checking here for the announcements of when the class at CFAN will resume.
Remember that 86 degree day in June? Maybe you were one of the over 50 participants that joined Sherina, Rica, Nancy S, Clancy, Kelly M. , Annmarie and Cindy for the MOTHER of all Zumbathons. We raised nearly $7,000 for the Pierce County Commission Against Domestic Violence and other agencies to help in ending Domestic Violence. Way to rock Zumba ladies!
In June Sherina headed to the Lakewood Community Center to offer Zumba on Wednesday & Friday Nights. She will be there in 2009 also SO call 253-798-4176 & sign up for a class in Lakewoood!
We even got to take a trip to beatiful Lake Crescent, WA where got to lead a Zumba party for 15 wonderful ladies at their annual “grandma party. If you want us to bring some life to your party or office gathering contact us at zumbaworks@yahoo.com. Ain’t no PARTY like a ZUMBA PARTY!
Are you a member of Anytime Fitness in Dupont or the Tacoma Center YMCA? Check there schedules for Sherina’s class-sorry folks…you have to be a member.
We hope you will continue to join us for more Zumba Fitness classes and exciting fundraisers and special events in 2009. Our wish for you is HEALTH in mind, body and spirit, Happiness, prosperity, HOPE, and most of all LOVE. Oh, and of course ZUMBA!
Thanks for getting your Zumba on with us!
Peace on Earth & Happy New year
Zumba Fitness Fundraiser
Saturday January 17th 1:00- 3:00pm
I’m always trying to think of new ways to connect with my friends. We all just get so busy with Life-families, work, school, volunteering and other activities. How about you? How do you and your friends stay in touch? I’ve tried everything I can think out to try to get my friends Marie and Ro to check out my Zumba class in Tacoma, but it’s been a year & it still hasn’t happened yet. I’ve planned Zumba fundraisers and my own Zumba birthday party hoping I could pull in all my friends that I have not seen for a while. That didn’t work but the party was still lots of fun for folks like me who have to get their Zumba class fix each week.
So I had this idea for a Girls’ Night Out Holiday Harvest Party in Tacoma hoping that I will get to connect with my gal pals that I don’t get to see often. This is going to be a spectacular night out shopping, networking and socializing. No need to worry about holiday gifts- you will be sure to find something for everyone under one roof! Wine tasting and yummy treats will complete the experience. Please join us November 14, 2008, 5-8pm at the historic Catherine Place House.
I hope this is a great way for other ladies to have a Girls’ Night Out and have fun too so gather your friends and keep watching the Girls’ Night Out website for updated details on the Pierce County Girls’ Night Out!!
